Symptoms of Gout – Things to Be Aware

There are a few symptoms of gout that always occur. Many times it can be difficult to diagnosis gout due to the similarity of other illnesses. Gout is a type of arthritis and mainly affects the joints. Some common symptoms include swelling, inflammation, redness and pain. The most common joint for gout is the big toe though it can affect any other joints. When treating gout methods involve treating the symptoms as well as the actually cause.

Gout is a particular problem for men as it will affect men at a much higher rate then women, particularly men over 40. If goat is not treated then it can lead to joint and kidney damage and can cause complications for heart disease and diabetes. Goat occurs because the levels of uric acid in the blood become elevated. Uric acid is removed from the blood by the kidneys and can be a sign of kidney problems.

Gout can come about quickly, within 12 to 24 hours of raised uric acid levels in the blood. But it can take weeks to go away. Symptoms associated with gout include skin looking red or shiny, the joint feeling hot, swelling of the joint, tenderness in the joint and sever pain in the joint. Some other more minor symptoms include a slight fever, nausea and loss of appetite.

Gout symptoms can last up to a few weeks though the faster the gout is treated the faster the symptoms will go away. Treatments can include taking NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications), paracetamol for the pain (aspirin should not be used as this will increase levels of uric acid), colchicines (blocks production of uric acid), steroids and drinking large quantities of water.

The best treatment foe gout is to prevent it. This can be done by using medication that causes the kidneys to remove more uric acid from the blood or reduce your body’s production of uric acid. A natural remedy, without medication, is to monitor your diet and avoid specific foods. Certain foods contain high levels of purines. Purines are broken down in the body and become uric acid.

In order to properly diagnosis gout your doctor may need to perform certain tests including a full medical history, joint fluid test and blood test. The one test that can completely confirm gout is the joint fluid test. Though this will require some anesthesia and a long needle.
