When we speak of divine revelations, the most common forms may be dreams and visions. We know that God still speaks today and dream is one way He sends His messages. Of course, not all dreams carry divine information.
In fact most of them are induced by frequent day time stimulations and mental activities. As it says in Ecclesiastes, dreams come through busyness. People also experience dreams that are related to body senses during sleep. Like what you probably have experienced, dreams of toilet because you had nature call. Not all dreams are from God, worse still some are from evil spirits.
In Deuteronomy chapter 13 we clearly see dreams of this nature.
If a dreamer gives people some sort of signs and it came to pass. But then he uses the opportunity to promote idol worship. This man must be stoned to death. Obviously, the dream was not from God but from evil spirits.
There are often temptations to lead people to perish. We must be watchful enough to discern and resist them.
It is biblical that God speaks with dreams and visions. Examples from both the Old Testament and the New Testament clearly illustrate the fact. King Solomon dreamed that God were there to give him anything he asked for. He then asked for wisdom to manage the nation. God was well pleased and gave him unprecedented prosperity.
In the book of revelations, a large part of the visions may have come from Apostle John's dream. Like all other things that God does, He gives divine dreams with a purpose.
In some special occasions in the Bible, God gave significant dreams that affected the whole generation and the age to come.
These kind of big dreams seem to be no more after the writing of the scripture is completed. But God still speaks through dreams today, with more personal purposes. We have heard witnesses in which God gave genuine divine dreams helping someone to become more mature, to be saved and to preach the gospel. A very important biblical truth about dreams which the reader should learn is that no one in the bible has ever asked for a dream. We believe that no one should do that, either. As described in the book of Daniel, some divine dreams are revelations about God's future plan. He does it in mercy and love to make people watchful for the things to come. Some stubborn men also received warning from God in dreams. This is also an expression of His loving kindness because the men is stopped from sinning and being judged. Although God still uses dreams to speak to people even today, Christians should focus more on their study and understanding of truth.
If someone only bases his faith of Jesus on merely dreams and visions without a clear understanding of the Doctrine of the whole bible, he could be easily deceived out of truth.
Therefore, we must test every prophetic message with biblical truth and discern whether the message leads people to know God and love God or it creates confusions and distress.
If we notice any messages which induce people to stop reading the bible or stop praying to God, then these are obviously not from God. Good tree bears good fruit, bad tree bears bad fruit.
