There are many people that play golf.
In fact there are over 30 million just in the United States. Those numbers do not reflect how many people play well. Herein lies the problem. Golf is a sport that not only requires talent, there is an ongoing need for practice.
The challenge is that most people have never been properly taught how to play or practice. Golf lessons will accomplish both of those things. Unlike many sports, where once you understand how to play, you may compete at a decent level, golf has little intricacies that if not properly taught will never be learned. Not only will you need to learn how to hit a golf ball, how you approach the ball is important.
They way the club is held is important. And most importantly is how you hit shots other than from the tee. A Golf Professional will take the time, through a series of lessons to assist you. Once you have a feel for all of these types of shots, then having putting lessons will help you take many shots off of your score. To keep it simple, starting with a good stance will go a long way in making your golf swing better. A teaching Professional will help you get comfortable as you approach your ball. When you consider that ball placement will change, depending on what type of shot is preferred, it is important that you understand why you will be doing what! Once you are comfortable over the ball, they will address your grip.
There are several methods to properly hold a golf club. Whether you employ the Vardin grip, an interlock grip or even a baseball grip, will determine how you hit the shot. And at the end of the day, that is all you are really trying to accomplish. Now that have the club in hand and have addressed your ball, the next step is actually hitting it. Through practice and the direction of a Professional teacher, you will be taught how to properly take away the club and what position it needs to be in at the top of your swing.
The traditional goal is to have the club parallel to the ground. Some physical restrictions may vary this position, but that is the best place for your club to stop.
Your club should be parallel to the ground and pointing towards the target.
Then your body should take over to complete the swing. Many people start using their hands and arms. This is a mistake and your teacher can show you how to overcome this. Professional golfers will not use their hands until the club is almost back to the ball.
In other words, at about the time that your golf club is again, parallel to the ground, on the way down, your big muscles should be doing the work. This is when the power comes into play.
The goal is to generate power without over swinging the club.
The downswing is what will propel the ball, so this is where the power comes into play. However, until you are about half way down, your big muscles should be doing the work, not your hands and arms. Think of it as a recoil and uncoil. This will give you some idea of what you are trying to do. Again, a Professional will be able to assist you.
The players on Tour, do not use their hands and wrists until the club is almost parallel to the ground on the way back to the tee.
Then they release all of the power and hit the ball.
The swing is not complete until you have finished. That means that your belly should be pointing towards the target and the club should fold, comfortably. This is the part of the swing that makes the ball head in the direction that you planned. Many new players do not understand the follow through. That means that your swing does not stop as soon as you make contact. Part of making the ball head in the direction that you want it to is based on your completion of your swing.
The goal here is to finish the swing with your belt buckle pointing at your original target. Simply put, you have the basics of a swing.
It will be different for swings made in the fairway and in the rough.
Your swing will change if you need to hit it high or low.
There will be changes in it if you are chipping or putting. When it comes to improving your score, putting lessons are at least as important as the rest, when you consider that at least 50% of your shots are made from the green. Although this may sound complicated it is not. Once you are taught the basics, you will be able to play. People who practice what they have been taught, will get better. This will happen more quickly if you have taken golf lessons. So, go to the range and speak to a Professional.
It does not matter if you are brand new at the game or if you have played for a long time.
It is very easy to develop bad habits and very hard to get rid of them without help. When at the range, work with a teacher and while there, work on improving your overall game with putting lessons and you will winning all of your side bets and walking away from the course with a big smile on your face.
