What is desktop memory? It's a key aspect of a computer and essential to its function. Memory is a broad term, but it basically defines how a computer performs, which is what makes it so important. What is equally important is knowing what exactly it is and how it works in order to better maintain it. Directly defined, memory simply stores information.
It stores information in order to run immediate and dormant processes.
Immediate processes include such things as typing on a keyboard or moving the mouse. Dormant processes are stored data such as saving a file or installing a program. Without memory, these functions could not be performed, even at a base level. Memory comes in several different forms, but the main two categories of memory are called RAM (random access memory) and ROM (read-only memory). RAM is power-dependent (aka volatile) memory that stores information immediately about things being processed to allow the computer to do several things at once. ROM is responsible for hard coded storage (like saving a file) for use later. Of the two, RAM is by far the most important, which is why it may be wise to upgrade as technology advances.
In order to upgrade memory, it's important to know if a computer can upgrade, because motherboards have a certain memory limit.
It is also important to know how many pins that motherboard has for memory (whether it's 120 pins or 240 pins). Finally, memory can only be installed in pairs, so they must be bought and used two at a time. ROM, albeit not as important, can be upgraded as well, though it is not usually needed.
The only time that it is required to upgrade ROM is when you plan to put more information on your computer than it currently can handle. Upgrading ROM, thankfully, is much easier because the only thing that really changes between ROM devices is the total amount of storage. More important than upgrading to new memory is maintaining the memory that you do have. To do so, they must be digitally refreshed, cleaned, and/or organized. RAM, being power dependent, is refreshed every time a computer shuts down or restarts (making it key to do so every now and then). ROM must be de-fragmented (or organized) to eliminate wasted space and quicken file access.
There are other things that are important to know about desktop memory, but these are the most important.
You need to take care of your RAM, or the computer cannot run any of its processes, and you need to take care of your ROM, or you won't be able to save information. Unmaintained and/or upgraded memory will hinder computer performance. Article Source: Important Information About Desktop Memory
