When trying to house train a puppy, it is important to do the right thing from the very beginning.

The first thing you should do is take the new puppy out in the yard and keep them out there until they go potty. Remember to praise the puppy for doing its deed. Be sure to take it out frequently (every 2 hours is recommended) and play with it often. Secondly, remember to feed your new puppy inside his crate. Almost immediately thereafter, take him outside to potty.

It is important to be consistent in this practice as this makes the training process go much smoother. Enabling your puppy to feel grass under his feet when it's time to go will reinforce the outside as an appropriate place to eliminate.

You might need to help him along by walking around first. Remember also to take your puppy outside again just before bedtime.

If he cries during the night, it may be that he needs a bathroom break. Take him outside if that's the case. After you've done this, bring him back inside and put him in his crate again. Try to keep the puppy as calm as possible so that he'll go back to sleep.

If you don't break from this routine, you'll find that after a few days, your dog will sleep straight through the night. All of these tips notwithstanding, you should probably lay down newspaper in the puppy's area so that she will have a place to go, just in case.

The idea is that you can gradually move this newspaper further and further away- and closer to the door to the outside. Always reward your puppy for good work, such as going to the bathroom outside. Be sure to praise him and give him lots of love and the occasional treat. Remember to only reward the puppy only when they have been good. After time it will come natural to them and they will know what needs to be done for a treat.
