Mother's day will soon be here~ that precious day of the year when families pamper wives and mothers, to show them what an irreplaceable treasure they are. Though seemingly inadequate, this one day created especially to honor mothers allows us to publicly express our love and appreciation to her. Surprisingly, Mother's Day is a relatively young holiday.
The first official observance of this day was in a church service in May of 1910, honoring a woman by the name of Anna Jarvis.
In the years following, the practice of honoring mothers each year became more popular and widely accepted, and as a result the Mother's Day International Association was born in December of 1912.
The Association promoted and encouraged Mother's Day, and the tradition grew enormously throughout the country. During the service honoring Anna Jarvis, white carnations had been arranged in a jar and used to decorate the speaking platform. Following the service, each mother was given one of the carnations as a memento.
It was in this way that the now common custom of flowers for Mother's Day beganDuring his presidency, Woodrow Wilson made a presidential proclamation regarding Mother's Day. He declared it a national holiday, and Americans were asked to show public expressions of reverence to mothers. This special day was declared to be the second Sunday in May each year. President Wilson directed government officials to display the country's flag on all government buildings, and invited citizens to display their flags at their homes and other suitable places the second Sunday in May. By doing this, he said, the country would be publicly announcing their love and reverence for the mothers of the country. By 1917, Mother's Day had become a shadow of the original intent of the day. Mother's Day was so commercialized that even Anna Jarvis, who had dedicated her life to promoting Mother's day as a way to honor all mothers whether living or dead, became a major opponent to the holiday. Though people were still honoring their mothers, it had become a contest of gifts and meaningless cards, rather than the observance it was intended to be. Today Mother's day continues to be one of the most commercially successful days of the year, while remaining a day of honor.
