There is so much talk about the 'imminent' polar shift or 2012 magnetic polar reversal that the NASA website has been pouring with emails and questions lately – ranging from really nutty to exceedingly scary. But what's the real deal with the magnetic polar reversal and polar shift, that are bound to occur in the very near future? For the record, magnetic polar reversal and polar shift are two very distinct occurrences. So what exactly are these occurrences and why should we worry? Polar ShiftPolar shift has been contemplated by amateur and maverick psychics, end of the world fanatics, astrologers, serious geophysicists and scientists alike.
In the past, it is nothing more than a theory that is supposed to explain the drastic climate changes that have happened in the past; today it is at the heart of serious scientific studies.
In theory, polar shift is triggered by the uneven distribution of weight on the surface of the Earth. Early theorists suggest that this could be caused by the formation of the massive blocks of ice in either North or South Pole. This could then cause the Earth to tilt on its axis. After the imbalance occurred, the planet will continue to rotate on its axis until the land and ice masses are redistributed near the equator. This results in the change of the location of the continents, possibly causing the arctic to exchange places with the equator.
Theoretically, this shift will happen at a rate faster than what is normally projected for plate tectonics, which are in constant motion. Although the theory is quite fascinating, in actuality it is not as exciting, it can in fact be very drastic. This theory has been around since 1842 when French mathematician, Joseph Adhmar, proposed that a tilt on the Earth's axis could happen as a result of the wide scale erosion of the polar caps. This in turn will change the center of the Earth's gravity and will cause catastrophes that could spell the end of mankind. Magnetic Pole ReversalOftentimes confused with polar shift theory, magnetic pole reversal is a theory that is actually backed with credible evidence. This, in fact, is a widely accepted theory within the scientific community because of the validity of its claims and the presence of evidence to support it. Magnetic pole reversal is a phenomenon in which the magnetic poles switch, turning the North Pole, South, and the South Pole, North.
In this theory, the changes in the magnetic field is triggered by the Earth's molten core. This phenomenon results in the change of location of Aurora Borealis on top of other strange activities. Scientists fear that this will cause serious weakening in the Earth's magnetic shield, making it easier for cosmic rays and other heavenly objects to pierce through our planet's atmosphere. Overall, though, life will continue as it is. Experts say that magnetic pole reversal and pole shift are phenomenon that are not likely to happen overnight, but over a course of several thousand even hundreds of years. 2012 magnetic polar reversal, therefore, may be nothing more than a hype, but who knows really?
