Baby Equipment can cover a vast variety of areas when it comes to looking after your baby. What is essential can also be another mind field to a new mother and we can often get lost in the look of something or the want for it, rather than actually needing it. That can lead to a lot of wasted money many people can't afford and also may result in forgetting the crucials. When it comes to what I think is essential, it is very different to many others.
I, for example, never bought a crib although this is considered essential by many, and I also didn't get a nursing chair or baby changing station.
I do however consider some items essential for a baby and have a few that many people seem to never own. This is my essential list of baby equipment:Clothing – This, of course, is the first thing we consider we a baby. Babies make a lot of mess so having plenty of clothes to reduce washloads is a good idea.
I had to change my son 4 or 5 times a day due to acid reflux issues. Car Seat – This is another item that would be considered straight off the bat.
In fact if you choose a hospital birth you will need it the moment your child is born. Baby sling – I found a baby sling to one of the most essential items I could own.
I have used it nearly everyday. My son was very colicky when he was a newborn and for the first 6 months or so and the only thing that really soothed him was taking him for walks in a sling or walking around the house with him in a sling. A sling is also a great way to keep your son close to you for the first 6 months of life (considered the In-Arms phase).
Your baby loves being closed to you and you will not spoil him for giving him what he needs. Cloths/Muslins – I needed a lot of mops to mop up my son's acid reflux issues.
I was lucky that I had lots of extra cloths from when I bought his diapers.
I think its a good idea to have a stock of cloths as babies are just messy little things. This will save you washing everyday. Nursing Pads – In the first few weeks and even months you will have very leaky breasts. Nursing pads are a must but make sure you get decent ones as with some cheap brands (if you choose disposables) you will have to use 3 or 4 at a time to prevent leakage on your tops. Breast Pump – This is on this list because for me, it was absolutely essential from the get go.
I managed to get Mastisis as a result of my breasts being too full and had to go buy a pump to help relieve it.
I also found that the pump allowed me to get some milk ready so my husband could feed our son while I got much needed rest (I did this in the first 6 weeks, although it is recommended you don't use a pump this early as it may cause problems for your baby and their ability to latch). This is my list of essentials.
I would make sure I had this again for the next baby.
It may not be to everyones liking but other items I thought I needed either didn't get used or didn't get used to justify the cost.
