To lead a nonprofit organization, you will need support from outside sources.
These outside sources will help you to create project awareness, and ideally, success. Exploring all possible resources will help to best achieve your goals, while saving money and time. Traditionally, the costs, time and required training of many methods meant that many tools were out of reach for non-profits. Luckily, technology has developed rapidly which has created many new web-based tools that are cost-effective and easy to implement.
These tools have greatly broadened the concept of who can help with the collaboration process. One example of a very helpful web-based tool is Basecamp. This resource allows organizations to manage projects and collaborate with various team members in each project. A wiki may also offer many advantages.
They can capture information that would otherwise be unknown.
They are fast and easy to edit, and mistakes are easy to fix. Organizations can use wikis to post information, post requirements for future projects, or track and record news about your cause.
The above mentioned tools were asynchronous, meaning added and saved for later review.
There are also many synchronous (or real-time) tools, which can also be very helpful.
The most basic of these are instant messaging, which allows a user to talk to someone via the internet, in real time. Another great real-time tool is Google Wave. This tool allows multiple users to join together where they can write and respond to each other while seeing each character appear in real time. New users can join in and reply the group's entire conversation. Conversations and documents can also be enhanced with text, photos, videos, maps and more. Social networking sites, such as LinkedIn,Facebook and Twitter, focus on building online communities of people who share interests, or are interested in exploring the interests or activities of others. This is a great way to help get outside involvement for your project.
These tools help people share information to achieve a common goal. Each site has its own advantages and disadvantages. On Twitter, people can choose to follow whatever they want, and everyone can see what you have to say. Whereas on Facebook and LinkedIn, you have to be invited. However, Facebook allows for you are allowed more space for updates and content.
There is less space for this on Twitter, and it gets fewer readerships. A downside to most social networking sites is the amount of time required. One possible solution to this is to automate part of the updating process. Hootsuite.com allows you to program certain updates or information in advance. This can help save a great deal of time, and keep your profiles current. One of the challenges you face in social media is the same as in any media, to get read. Blogs are a great way to get your ideas out there, and help people to find their way to your organization. Blogs also help sites rank highly from a search engine optimization (SEO) point of view. Part of way to get read is by adding value to use of the readers time. One of the ways to do this is to be humorous. Another way is to be interesting. Let them fulfill their need to make a difference in the world.
It may seem impossible to achieve all of your goals, but through collaboration and the tools it takes to enable it, you can both spread the effort and keep track of it.
