How To Decide Whether To Buy A Stair Chair Lift Or Not

Most of us already know what a stair chair lift is and how they work.

They provide freedom to those that have mobility issues. While money is always a concern it is my intention that this shouldn't be the driving force behind your decision on whether to purchase one of not. Don't let price win out over loyalty and a sense of duty. This is a short story about my grandmother and how our decision to get her a stair chair lift was a decision that will forever remain as one of the best decisions we ever made. My grandmother was born in the early 1900's in a small town in Italy. At an early age she became stricken with polio , which left her with a severe limp. As she grew older the limp had become increasingly worse, getting to the point where she could no longer make her way up the stairs very easily. She was living in an old brownstone in Brooklyn, New York and if you have ever been in one of these homes you know how steep and narrow the steps can be. She was a tough Italian woman that refused to admit she couldn't do something but this was becoming too much to overcome. We had a difficult decision to make about her future and what would be best for her. A nursing home was out of the question and moving was also not an option.

The church she attended everyday was right next door and being a devotedly religious person she couldn't bear the thought of not being able to go to church everyday. We made the decision to have a stair chair lift installed so she could remain in the place that made her the happiest. We contacted several companies that installed stair chair lifts and were somewhat surprised at the prices. Because of the layout of the brownstone the cost was going to be very expensive. My grandmother was on a fixed income and couldn't pay for the stair chair herself. We made the decision to have the stair chair lift installed and give my grandmother what she longed for, which was to live out the remainder of her life in the home she grew up in and raised a family in.

I will always remember the look on her face as she realized that she was able to remain where she was. Buying the stair chair lift was the best decision we ever made.

The money wasn't important.

It was the quality of life and the happiness an old woman received knowing that people cared for her and she was able to remain in a place she loved so dearly. What decision would you make?
