How To Multitask Well

I believe in focus. Sometimes high focus is the way to get more done. But sometimes, doing more than one thing at once is the way to go. 1 – What is the best use of time while you are talking on the phone?

Your mind is busy so you have to do something that is automatic. For me, I like to pace.

I wear a pedometer and I find that is an easy way to get my steps in.

I can also do light exercise.

I have improved my health by doing minor exercises and stretching while I'm on a conference call, I can easily stretch or do light repetitive weights.

I use phone time as organization time.

I clean out old files.

I also do light cleaning of my office.

I always keep windex and a rag handy.
2. Car Time. What can you do while you're in the car? While I'm in the car, I listen to audiobooks. Even though I live fairly close to work, I find that in a ten minute drive each way I can get through a lot of audio material.

I also have an Apple Ipod, so that I can listen to audio material while I'm flying. Frequently, there is time that I can cover audio material when I wouldn't be able to cover anything else, because I am doing something else concurrently. While you're driving, it's important to drive safely.

If you are going to talk on a cell phone while you drive, use a hands-free set.

You can also use a Dictaphone while you drive: this is another great time saver that allows you to remember and organize your thoughts. While dictating, remember to use bullet points while you talk aloud: just because you are speaking it, doesn't mean it has to be a complete sentence.
3. Can you use your exercise time. Of course – many people do. Go to any gym and many people have ear buds or are watching the TV screens.

Imagine what you could learn if you listened to books or language while exercising.

I also like working out with a friend.

It is actually quality time. Some of my closest friends are those I have worked out with.
4.

I do not happen to own a TV but do think multitasking in front of it makes sense. Exercise and stretching are two things that come to mind.

I do not knit but that would work too. TV time can also be a great time to do chores. Husk the corn, pod the peas, make dinner.
5. Wait Times.

It is best to always be prepared for wait times. Even if you only have two or three minutes to wait, why not spend that time reading a book or magazine?

You'd be surprised at the number of tasks you can accomplish in three or four minute bursts. Choose your multitasking tasks to complement what your are dong.

If what you are doing requires mental thought, do something automatic and physical at the same time. For many people, they would be healthier by thinking of multitasking this way. And read my articles on the myth of multitasking – sometimes 100% focus is better.
