Pets In Popular Movies

Think about all the movies you've seen that feature a pet as a central character or in a supporting role. Many films use pets to add another layer of emotional depth to their storylines.

The stories of these on-screen pets resonate with us, as most of us have experienced the great benefits of owning a pet. Dogs and cats are common as pets in movies, but unorthodox pets such as snakes also show up from time to time.

These pets add an extra dimension to their respective movies. Many films actually focus on a pet as a central element of the plot. Consider the following movies, which all use pets to great effect in their storylines. One movie that stars pets in its central roles is 101 Dalmatians.

In this classic Disney movie, the talking Dalmatians from the film's title are on an adventure to save their family from Cruella Deville. A more recent movie series with pets playing a central role is “Dr. Dolittle,” starring Eddie Murphy as a scientist who talks to animals. Unfortunately for the doctor, his “gift” didn't always seem to be quite so beneficial. Pets often play supporting roles as companions to a movie's protagonist, as in “The Mask. ” Jim Carrey was the star of the movie, but his dog Milo played an important role as his partner.

The film classic “The Wizard of Oz,” released in 1939, shows that pets have been used as major characters in film for as long as movies have been around.

In this movie, Dorothy is accompanied by her faithful dog Toto, who stays by her side in her quest to find the Wizard of Oz and return to her home in Kansas. Computer-generated graphics have become extremely popular in movies lately, and pet movies are no exception.

The recent “Garfield” movie, based on the comic strip of the same name, features the famous cat in a computer-animated role. Watching pets in these kinds of roles is fun because we get to hear a celebrity voice actor lend the character a unique personality.
