The first picture of a library that comes to the mind is a room lined with shelves and full of books. Many people earlier owned libraries of their own because they collected books, maintained them and liked to spend a lot of time amidst the books.
It was perhaps a status symbol, but today for a book-lover, a library is still a fulfilling experience, where he can touch and turn the books to choose the one that he wants to read. Do we know the future of the Library?
The digital library is the future library, because only a limited number of people are borrowing books from libraries for the purpose of reading them. People will continue to pursue reading as a hobby, and today most of them are doing it from a screen, instead of a book.
The future library will contain a much larger collection of books, which can be read digitally, because the importance of libraries where only specific books are available is fast diminishing.
The E-library in a school should be planned and constructed by the school architect in such a way that it is the most attractive area in the school. After all, whether libraries are digital or not, they are believed to be the best delivery and information hubs both online and offline.
The net-generation obviously prefers the visual and the virtual, and if the library offers some “value-added” qualities, information-seekers will flock to the E-library to get the information that they need.
It is important to find a physical merger with the IT program in any educational institution.
The future library in a school for example will still hold importance, but the librarian will expand programs which include virtual libraries, so that students outside the school can also have access to them. Books are here to stay; it is only the format that will undergo a change.
It is important for every library to realize that if the digital programs are made available with them, the same users who would earlier sift through reference books and spend long hours in the library, will again come back to them for the same information, but now digitalized. Whether they want to see films, watch DVDs or just update information, the library can offer the complete package.
The maintenance of a library is expensive, and it is the librarian, the historian and the archivist who is responsible for collecting and categorizing books.
If libraries should continue to be funded, and the collections updated by employing a qualified librarian, people will automatically venture into such places and realize their worth and develop an interest for books.
Information in today's world comes free, but the pleasure of reading a book cannot be compared to reading on a screen. But the DVD library and the CD library still exists, only it has become high-tech. People still borrow movies from DVD libraries, because downloading everything is firstly not possible, and probably not economically viable.
It is illegal and unethical too. Hence the future of the library looks exciting in its digital form resembling an activity hub.
It will be a major change from the quiet library of the past, because several kinds of environments will be offered, in which each student can learn in his own way. After all, learning is the main aim in a library, and if that is achieved, the means are inconsequential.
