In these modern times it is increasingly common for individuals and businesses to use the services of a business or life coach to help them set and achieve specific targets.
The reason thought to be behind the increased use of these practices is a less stubborn attitude which currently prevails in society – in short we have all accepted that we sometimes need a little external help.
It has been widely accepted that business or life coaching can really help. So what is involved in these two methods of coaching and how can they help?
These types of coaching have only really been around as a distinct profession since the early 90s. Most coaching schools are privately owned businesses and are self regulating since no industry wide coaching regulation body currently exists. Life coaching is the practice of helping individuals formulate and ultimately achieve personal goals.
The methods used will vary from coach to coach but usually psychological analysis is beyond the remit of a life coach and instead life coaches will use methods which have been learned from the areas of sociology, career counselling and mentoring. A man called Ben Karter is the person who is said to have kicked off the life coaching industry as we know it today. Before his transformation into a motivational speaker Ben was a sports coach and many of the methods he used in his motivational talks are still used by life coaches to this day. With regard to business coaching, even though the role of the business coach has changed dramatically over time, research papers show that many organisations were using some form of internal coaching from the 1930s to 1960s. Business coaching must be viewed as being distinct from mentoring. To be a good business coach you must have the skills of a good mentor but also you must have specific business expertise and experience which is relevant to the person you are coaching. Life coaches and business coaches both allow businesses and individuals to achieve their goals by giving them specific objectives which are chosen specifically for the business or individual involved. Life coaching and business coaching also involve giving the individual with the correct mindset to achieve their goals.
