Adults may cluck their tongue at kids and money, and how the kids' constant attitude is to want more, no matter where it comes from. But when adults look in the mirror, they may be a little sheepish, because many of them see money in pretty much the same way. So when it comes to children and money, and how irresponsible kids' attitudes are, they don't always have the greatest role models. Nor, until certain organizations took things in hand, did they have anyone to teach them a better way. One of the first ways people started addressing the “money and kids” issue was to create camps where kids could learn responsible financial principles. To most adults, for whom money matters are a necessary evil, but unspeakably boring, this idea sounded insane. Yet now there are programs all over the country where kids have the chance to start their own businesses from scratch and learn sound financial practices; all while having a great time. Teaching kids about money is all in the methods, and there are some pretty creative methods out there.
The kids hardly realize they are learning a “boring” subject when they're having so much fun. Creative Wealth International (http://www.creativewealthintl.org), the organization that created Camp Millionaire, also provides a modular curriculum for schools called Creative Cash at School.
It's a kit that comes with an instructor's guide, several money jars, some play money called “moola,” play stock certificates, vocabulary lists, and much more. Each module builds on the previous one, for a total of five modules. This instruction about kids and money is obviously very hands-on, and teaches the kids some solid principles while they're having fun.
The need is growing, to resolve problems with kids and money before the nation raises another generation of financially irresponsible adults. Too much more of this situation could bring economic ruin not just to individual citizens but to the entire country.
It seems the way to raise responsible adults is to start as young as possible, teaching proper money management to children. Many parents aren't doing well in this area themselves, so they can hardly teach their kids. But that's what all of these organizations, camps and writers are now trying to do for them.
