Although at times it can take a lifetime to make a dream of going on a safari come true. However, with Kalahari desert safaris, one can often make the most of such a dream if and when one is able to turn such dream into reality. Although, one must realize that not only does one need to plan for such a journey by most likely first acquiring a passport but that vaccinations against diseases prone to such areas may also be required. Last but not least, when traveling in such areas, it is good to have all such paperwork readily available so that if and when asked for same one can provide such documentation to local authorities immediately and without question.
Also, before making a final decision on which area of the African desert one may wish to visit, first one may want to know a little more about the Kalahari desert and the wildlife often seen therein. For, this area, unlike other parts of the desert offers both plateau and desert which can be great viewing areas when seeking to watch such wildlife.
In addition, as the area offers both semi-arid and arid sands which extend beyond nine hundred square kilometers or 350,000 square miles which includes some areas of Namibia and most of Botswana, it also remains one of the most active for wildlife viewing. As such, there are both great grazing areas and standing pools of water where wildlife can often be seen taking a drink or grazing, especially just after heavy rains which often occur each Spring. So, with the standing pools of water and open land available to graze, this area has seen some of the most active wildlife in relation to going on such a safari. Still, even with the rainy seasons, rainfall amounts only reach an approximate 3 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches of rainfall per year which while not a lot can at least sustain some plant and animal life within the region. Unlike many other areas, in which some wildlife may roam, as such animals can cross the desert in search of water; However when it comes to plants, no plants could ever survive as these areas see little, if any rainfall, at any time during the year. Of course, due to extreme summer temperatures, individuals wishing to travel to the area may want to plan such a safari for Spring or Fall, either during or after the rainy season rather than during hot Summer months. For, not only is one going to have a much more enjoyable experience related to the weather but also in relation to the amount of wildlife one may hope to see on such a journey. For, when it comes to the basin of the Kalahari, the area covers an additional nine hundred seventy thousand square miles which extend further into Botswana, Namibia and the Southern most part of Africa.
In addition, while not part of Africa, the desert borders Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Also, while water is limited in such areas, the only river, the Okavango, does flow into a Northwest delta from which there have been many marshes formed which are also rich in wildlife.
In relation to what type of wildlife one may see on such a safari, if one has access to any of the local ancient riverbeds which have dried out over time, also known as the Omuraba-Traverse, in the central part of the Northern areas of the desert, one can find standing pools at which a variety of wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, lions and cheetahs may often be spotted either grazing or drinking from such pools of water. As such, these dried out riverbed areas now make for great grazing spots, mostly for elephants and giraffe, though lions and cheetahs can often still be spotted in the area.
Therefore, regardless as to the area in which one chooses to go on such a safari, these Kalahari desert safaris can provide a great deal of opportunity to see the massive desert along with a great deal of wildlife. However, unless one plans ahead, saves a great deal of money, has a passport and has attended to all other required documentation and vaccines, one may only be setting oneself up for disappointment. For, such safaris, while a trip of a lifetime, can also take a lifetime to save for one. To this end, it is always good to plan, price and save, then when one has the resources available finalize such planning by requesting a passport and talking with a health care provider about which vaccinations are required for such a journey into the wild plateau and semi-desert which can only be found in the Kalahari desert in the Southernmost part of Africa.
