There has been a debate going on for several years now. This debate is on whether getting pregnant during a period is possible. Anytime you have unprotected sex it is possible to get pregnant. Although while your period is going on is unlikely, there is still a possibility you could face pregnancy.
There is always a possibility that you can get pregnant during your period. As each woman is different, so are their periods.
The way conception happens is when the egg meets the sperm.
If the sperm is successful in getting into the egg, then conception can occur. For pregnancy to occur, sperm must be in the females body when the egg is released. When the female is menstruating the uterine lining and egg are expelled from the body. Once the egg is released from the ovary it can survive inside for around twenty four hours.
If sperm happens to be inside the reproductive system as well, there is a chance that pregnancy can occur. Sperm can last inside the reproductive system for up to five days or even longer, and if the person has unprotected sex during the period then there is a risk of pregnancy. Having a shorter menstrual cycle than the regular 28 day cycle can make this possibility higher. To measure your cycle, you count from the first day of your period to the first day of the next time you have a period. Most women average a twenty eight day cycle. Others may have a much shorter cycle of only twenty two days. Shorter cycles can increase the chances of unexpected pregnancies. Because of a shorter cycle, the time of ovulation may be closer to when the menstruation cycle has ended and bleeding has ceased. Most woman have what is called breakthrough bleeding or spotting. Often women mistake this spotting for their real period. Breakthrough bleeding is when you are spotting and not having an actual period. Most times spotting occurs around the time of ovulation when a woman is at her most fertile peak. Because this spotting is mistaken for a full blown period, many women can become pregnant during this time. Although it is unlikely, it is possible for women to become pregnant during their period.
The only way to ensure that you will not become pregnant is to use protection every time you have sex. Since each and every woman is different, there is no way of knowing when you will be safe from falling pregnant.
The myth that you will not become pregnant during your period is one reason there are many unplanned and unexpected pregnancies, especially for teenagers and young adults. Since sperm does survive inside the reproductive system for five days or more there is always a possibility.
