Shops that can repair bucket trucks are few and far between as it is.
Is it really worth driving the extra distance to take a bucket truck in for repairs at a more reputable shop? Without a doubt, the answer is “Yes”. Since a bucket truck is an indispensable piece of equipment for most contractors in the electric utility, telecommunications, and forestry industries (amongst others), every day the truck is in the shop for repairs is a day the contractor isn't making money. While the local mechanic's shop may offer to perform bucket truck service for less than the reputable bucket truck repair shop 20 miles down the road, will he have certified mechanics on staff capable of performing the complex mechanical and hydraulic repairs these trucks sometimes need? Will he even have access to replacement parts that are specific to these trucks if he doesn't normally perform repairs on them? Opting for bargain service with a mechanic that doesn't regularly perform service on bucket trucks can cost contractors even more money as they wait for him to figure out what's wrong with the truck and where to get the replacement parts for it.
Instead, contractors should consider taking their bucket trucks for repairs at a more reputable shop, where mechanics work on bucket truck repairs on a daily basis and where parts are easily accessible. Big name brands like Altec have certified repair centers scattered throughout the continental United States, and many companies that specialize in reconditioning and reselling used bucket trucks can also perform bucket truck service.
These companies have techs that are familiar with the ins and outs of the equipment, can diagnose problems quickly, have easy access to any replacement parts that are needed and in some cases have relationships with manufacturers that make it possible to order parts that are otherwise extremely difficult to find. Most local mechanics just can't do that for a contractor. Contractors should also consider the repair shop's length of time in business. Does the shop have a long track record of performing repairs on bucket trucks or has the shop just started business? Shops that have been around for several years are more likely to treat their customer's well.
It's simple, if a shop can do a great job on bucket truck repairs, offers the service at a reasonable price, gets the truck out of the shop and back on the job quickly, they are more likely to have return customers. Return customers are what drives any business, and smaller shops with poor quality repairs are likely to fold within a few years at best. Contractors should choose a bucket truck repair shop with tenure, and the longer they have in the business the better! Contractors should take time to find a bucket truck service shop before repairs are needed and make plans to ahead of time to get the truck there in a worst case scenario. Doing so now will save time, stress and money in the long run knowing that the truck is going for service at a reputable shop.
