How important is packaging a product when it comes to customer perception? Think about this, when you go into the grocery store and you see a name brand product sitting right next to the cheaper white label version, do you go for the name brand just because you think it will taste better? Many customers do, even though the products inside the packaging might actually be made of the same ingredients and may have even been produced in the same factory. When a customer has the option to choose between several different skilled contractors all bidding for the same job, is he going to go for the white label product or the brand name? Odds are good that he'll go with the name brand unless the customer is sure that the inside product (the contractor's service) is every bit as good as that provided by the name brand competitor. While there are many things a contractor can do to showcase his product and improve business image, this article focuses primarily on the appearance of fleet vehicles. For many contractors that lack brick and mortar storefronts and big advertising budgets, customers form much of their opinion of the contractor based upon the appearance of the fleet vehicles seen providing services to other customers. Try to look at the vehicles objectively. See them as a customer might. Are the vehicles dirty? Do the vehicles have peeling or sun bleached safety stickers? Is the paint job scratched and peeling, enough so that it is really noticeable from a distance? Is the vehicle dented or damaged, again enough so that it is really noticeable from a distance? Are company logos easy to read and in good repair? If any of the above mentioned items apply to a contractors fleet vehicles, he should consider investing in a little bit of repair on the vehicle to improve it's appearance to customers. Many of these items cost very little to correct, and just starting with a regular routine of visiting the car wash can make a significant improvement! In cases where damage is more significant, or when repairs are more costly, contractors might just consider investing in a reconditioned fleet vehicle. Especially when considering vehicles like bucket trucks , savings can be significant off of the sticker price of a new truck.
